THE MITOCHONDRIAL GENOME

The mitochondrial genome is the other genome in the cells of man and animals, which was sequenced twenty years earlier than the nuclear genome (the ‘human genome project’).  Understanding its behavior, regulation and the manner in which it is damaged during aging and disease has reached maturity.  A method to maintain the integrity of mitochondrial DNA provides opportunity to create novel pharmaceuticals to treat diseases associated with mitochondrial DNA damage.
